resp=0x00 programming from raspberry pi: ttyAMA0 (GPIO), ttyUSB0

I am having a lot of problems being able to consistently upload to the arduino board from the pi. I have GPIO pins hooked up and an FDTI module directly soldered to board that links to usb of the Raspberry pi. (And pin 17 is linked to dtr) I am also using these guides :

https://www.petoi.com/forum/hardware/how-to-setup-raspberry-pi-for-programming-nybble-without-ftdi-module

Confirmed by: https://spellfoundry.com/docs/setting-up-the-arduino-ide-on-raspbian/ I fear the Ardunio is in a 'locked' state, reset does not seem to do anything. Any advice from experience would be helpful! (Please let me know if I can provide more information)
