Advice on wooden robot

I am creating a wooden robot for my son's woodworking class. Its basic function will be to walk. What kind of wood should I use for this? I have never made a wooden device like this before so completely in the dark when it comes to choosing the right wood. Furthermore, what kind of treatment should the wood be given to make it ideal for a project like this? Thanks in advance!

I can only share what I'm using:

1/8 inch thickness (thickness variance should be less than +-0.1mm)

B/B or higher grade baltic birch plywood (other standard wood should also work)

Both surfaces are processed by random orbit sand + water based paint + random orbit sand before sending it to laser cut.
