Beginner trying to start up Bittle needs help

I just finished assembling a Bittle and when I turn it on and try the simplest command with the IR controller it simply goes crazy - the legs going everywhich way and the servos making the most terrible noises. No matter what position I put the legs in, the same chaos happens. Is there a servo calibration or re-set step I am missing? Is there a trouble-shooting page you can direct me to? Thanks.

Open the app and scan available Bluetooth devices. Don't connect the robot with the phone's system-wide Bluetooth settings! Remember to open the Bluetooth service and grant the app access to the service. You also need to allow the location service for the app, though we are not using any of that information.
